This time from he heavier side of my collection. Slayer “Jihad” from the “Christ Illusion” Album. Nothing like some Slayer to get the blood going:
I have witnessed your death
I’ve seen it many times
Your tortured screams
Your decrepit little mind
I’ve followed strong with
But then because it bleeds
Whence in the end again, let the pillars fall!I will see you burned alive screaming for your God
I will hunt you down again for HimGod won’t judge what I’ve down
He crawls upon my feet
A privileged pain beneath
Bury all your dead
Unsplintered bones
I walk sifting through the blood
Beseiged to fear
Await the coming of the God!I will watch you die again for Him
Blood is raining downward
The searing faces duck
Conquered divide within
Terrorize the mind
I seek the end
It’s your holstering in hand
Your self reflection now spilling from the sky!I will see you burned alive screaming for your God
I will watch you dieThis is God’s war!
God’s war!
This is God’s war!
God’s war!War of holy principles
I’ve seen God’s helping your destruction
Slit the throat of heathen man and let his blood dilute the water
Bury your dead!Your God
He rapes his big believe
Believe we’ve switched shame with sorrow
I’ll take his towers from the world
bereaved upon your death bedThis is God’s war!
God’s war!
This is God’s war!
God’s war!
The holy war!Be optomistic, happy, and calm. Show no fear or anxiety. Smile at the face of God and your reward will be eternity. Holy warriors, your patience will be justified. Everything is for Him. You must not confront the enemy before you kill it. Strike as champions at the heart of the non-believers. Strike above the neck and at all extremities. For this is a point of no return for Almighty God. God will give bahishti to his faithful servants. When you reach ground zero you will have killed the enemy, the Great Satan!
One of the best songs ever written, Jimi Hendrix’ “Room Full of Mirrors”:
I used to live in a room full of mirrors
All I could see was me
Then I take my spirit and I smash my mirrors
And now the whole world is here for me to see
Now Im searching for my love to beA broken glass was solvin my brain
Cut and screamin crowdin in my head
A broken glass was loud in my brain
It used to fall on my dreams and cut me in my bed
It used to fall on my dreams and cut me in my bed
I say making love was strange in my bed
On the state of the music business
I’m not sure I like where the music business is going. Sure, I love new technology, and I love when artists use it in interesting ways. It’s just the idea of every new album, by all the “big” artists, being a multimedia event with ring tones, downloads, extra content, secret websites for fans to get extra content, etc. that rubs me wrong. This is where the luddite in me kicks in and says “Hey, why don’t you just release an album of your music and let it sell on its musical merit instead of including al this drivel that detracts from the musical experience (if there ever was one).”
This is where I see the music industry splitting in two, again. There will be the big selling artists making their pop crap for teenage girls and boys to swoon over, and there will be the “indie” artitsts that can actually play their instruments, sing their own songs without digital enhancement and still produce something worth listening to. But it’s not going to be the traditional sense of “indie” with a 3 or 4 piece guitar band, it’s will include all genres of music. The fact that this has actually been happening for years as part of the musical “underground” will escape a lot of people, but this “outsider” music is starting to make a ripple in the pond. When artists include opening bands that aren’t just a part of the latest trend, and instead pick them on their musical interestingness it makes me happy.
NiN recently had “The Bug” as their opening band. Not quite what most NiN fans will be in to, but I thought it was fantastic. Here is this well known artist, with legions of devoted fans saying “Hey, check this guy out, diversify.” Unfortunately most of the fans at the show in Victoria were just laughing and booing, but thats the way of most opening bands I guess.
So if you’re into it, and like to hear new things other than just what’s on the radio, check out these resources:Wire: Fantastic magazine full of great reviews and information. I’m starting my third year of subscription, and it’s still the only magazine I can read cover to cover.
Harmony In My Head: The website of Henry Rollins’ radio show set list. He plays some really eclectic stuff from the “genre of good music.” The show is available on-line and there is a site that archives them for easy download later, if you miss the Saturday night broadcast. He plays a lot of older stuff, but guaranteed at least 70% of the show will by music you’ve never heard before. He also rekindled my love of Jazz.
Well I hope this starts some people off on a journey to find new music, if I actually still have readers that is…
Friday Lyrics
This time a classic. I love this entire album, but this song in particular us just fantastic.
David Bowie “Moonage Daydream”:
I’m an alligator, I’m a mama-papa comin’ for you
I’m the space invader, I’ll be a rock’n'rollin’ bitch for you
Keep your mouth shut, you’re
squawking like a pink monkey bird
And I’m busting up my brains for the words
Keep your ‘lectric eye on me babe
Put your ray gun to my head

Press your space face close to mine, love
Freak out in the moonage daydream oh! yea!
Don’t fake it baby, lay the real thing on me
The church of man, love, is such a holy place to be
Make me baby, make me know you really care
Make me jump into the air
Keep your ‘lectric eye on me babe
Put your ray gun to my head
Press your space face close to mine, love
Freak out in the moonage daydream oh! yea!
Friday Lyrics
From Dinosaur Jr’s “Thumb”:
There never really is a good time
There’s always nothing much to say
Pretty good, not doing that fine
Getting up most every day
Steppin’ out, I tried to fix it
Pulled a thumb out of that hole
Give me ingredients, I’ll mix it
How can you move without a goal
There never really is a good time
There’s always nothing much to say
Pretty good, not doing that fine
Getting up most every day
An excuse is all you’re in for
The abuse is all you crave
Sure you know just what is in store
Wait and see if I’ll behave
There never really is a good time
There’s always nothing much to say
Pretty good, not doing that fine
Getting up most every day
There’s a time, just let me know now
When it’s with you I’ll be glad
That I was right there just to show you
At least it’s more than what you had
There never really is a good time
There never really is a good time
There’s always nothing much to say
Pretty good, not doing that fine
Getting up most every dayI came to Dinosaur Jr. Late in my music listening career. The Henry Rollins show had them as a live band doing “Forget the Swan” from their first album, and I loved every second of it. So much so that I now buy their albums as soon as I see them. They have some misses, but most of the songs are just classic rock, and they get me in a better mood on bad days…
Friday Lyrics
Bob Dylan “You’re Gonna Make Me lonesome When You Go”. Such a fantastic song, from one of his best albums.
I’ve seen love go by my door
It’s never been this close before
Never been so easy or so slow.
Been shooting in the dark too long
When somethin’s not right it’s wrong
Yer gonna make me lonesome when you go.Dragon clouds so high above
I’ve only known careless love,
It’s always hit me from below.
This time around it’s more correct
Right on target, so direct,
Yer gonna make me lonesome when you go.Purple clover, Queen Anne lace,
Crimson hair across your face,
You could make me cry if you don’t know.
Can’t remember what I was thinkin’ of
You might be spoilin’ me too much, love,
Yer gonna make me lonesome when you go.Flowers on the hillside, bloomin’ crazy,
Crickets talkin’ back and forth in rhyme,
Blue river runnin’ slow and lazy,
I could stay with you forever
And never realize the time.Situations have ended sad,
Relationships have all been bad.
Mine’ve been like Verlaine’s and Rimbaud.
But there’s no way I can compare
All those scenes to this affair,
Yer gonna make me lonesome when you go.Yer gonna make me wonder what I’m doin’,
Stayin’ far behind without you.
Yer gonna make me wonder what I’m sayin’,
Yer gonna make me give myself a good talkin’ to.I’ll look for you in old Honolulu,
San Francisco, Ashtabula,
Yer gonna have to leave me now, I know.
But I’ll see you in the sky above,
In the tall grass, in the ones I love,
Yer gonna make me lonesome when you go.
