I first seen these videos on a video tape that appeared to be at least a 3rd generation copy. I’m not sure if it was part of the original “leaked” by the band, but I know it wasn’t on the official “Closure” release, as that came a few years later. These videos disturbed me, but not enough that I didn’t keep watching. The people I watched them with talked about them for weeks afterwards. It was so well done that we didn’t know what was real and what wasn’t.
So I wake up this morning and check out Coilhouse, and they have a story and a link to the videos on You Tube. And I had to watch them again. Now that I know it was 100% fake and it was a publicity release I can admire them for the work put into making the video. To make a “Snuff” movie as promotional material really reaches the market you appeal to. Having grown up on slasher flicks, heavy metal and then industrial, reading Fangoria magazine, etc… This market was me.
I was already a light NiN fan, listening to “Pretty Hate Machine” until I had to buy a new tape, but this video release and the “Broken” and “Fixed” albums cemented Trent Reznor and Nine Inch Nails into my listening library for the past 18 years or so.
Again, these are not for the feint of heart, and if you don’t like simulated blood, gore, kidnappings, face poopings, fist fucking, chainsaw chopping, knife cutting, skin burning, teeth pulling etc… then do not watch the videos below.
