The Beatles “Let It Be”

I was in a foul mood and felt like shit on the way to work this morning. “Let it Be” came on and the sun peeked out from the clouds, everything seemed fresher, brighter. I started to relax and feel a bit better. I sang along, making sure that I didn’t hold back, looking like that berk that sings to himself in his car on the way to work. I thought about how things are on the up, as I’m slowly recuperating from a remission of Crohns. The season is changing, the weather warming up. I actually felt decent, and happy to be there, at that moment. The four minutes and three seconds passed, all too quickly, and things returned to normal through the magic of “Random Play” and Slipknot hit the speakers.

This song, to me, is beautiful. Even the repeating chorus, which gives it the “sing-alongness” that made it such a hit in 1970. The lyrics, as per Paul McCartney’s usual style, are easy but meaningful. They convey the message of the song without being too cerebral. It is the height of McCartney’s song writing, at least to me.

When I find myself in times of trouble, mother Mary comes to me,
speaking words of wisdom, let it be.
And in my hour of darkness she is standing right in front of me,
speaking words of wisdom, let it be.

Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be.
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be.

And when the broken hearted people living in the world agree,
there will be an answer, let it be.
For though they may be parted there is still a chance that they will see,
there will be an answer. let it be.

Let it be, let it be, …..

And when the night is cloudy, there is still a light, that shines on me,
shine until tomorrow, let it be.
I wake up to the sound of music, mother Mary comes to me,
speaking words of wisdom, let it be.

Let it be, let it be, …..

Curve “Superblaster”

Not lyrically brilliant, but a damned nice listen.

Curve “Superblaster”

i will reach out
to switch you on
i will reach out
till you come
i will reach out
to turn you on
i will reach out
until you come
we’re the masters
of the superblaster
“don’t start playing games
you can’t finish
don’t open doors
when you don’t know what’s waiting
don’t try to close your hands
they’re smaller than the rain
have you got anything left to say
before i shoot myself”
i will reach out
to find the truth
i will reach out
to steal your youth
we’re the masters
of the superblaster
“don’t start playing games
you can’t finish
don’t open doors
when you don’t know what’s waiting
don’t try to close your hands
they’re smaller than the rain
have you got anything left to say
oh no
oh no
i will reach out
to switch you on
i will reach out
to steal your youth
an that’s the god’s honest truth
we’re the masters
of the superblaster

The Misfits “She”

Sometimes you just need some good punk. Then there are The Misfits, ripping it up in your face…

She walked out with empty arms
Machine gun in her hand
She is good and she is bad
No one understands

She walked in, in silence
Never spoke a word
She’s got a rich daddy
She’s her daddy’s girl

She loves naked sin
He loves evil sex
She has lost control
They are growing old

She will hide in silence
Then her day will come
She was virgin vixen
She is on the run
She is on the run
SHE IS ON THE RUN!

The The “Sodium Light Baby”

Sometimes my search for new music makes me yearn for the music I know so well. This one is from ’93. I first heard this in the summer, and the whole album was just perfect for that year, and the next. To this day Matt Johnsons’ lyrics, and vocal delivery, still amaze me.

As I sat in the back of that old taxi cab.
waitin’ for the evening to come.
On every street of this city
I heard you call my name.

You’re the strangest feeling I ever had.
The strangest feeling.
You’re the strangest feeling I ever had.
The strangest feeling.

From the day that we are born
Until the day we die
We are hostage to our hearts’ desire.
And though I ride this city
I can’t escape from you.
And when I look up to the stars I wonder
Can the world really be so cruel?

You’re the strangest feeling I ever had.
The strangest feeling.
You’re the strangest feeling I ever had.
The strangest feeling.

Tonight the wolves are howling
I can’t escape from you.
A yearning past denying
I will surrender to.

You’re the strangest feeling I ever had.
The strangest feeling.
You’re the strangest feeling I ever had.
The strangest feeling.

Shine on me. Sodium light baby.
